Description
Summary:The Cistercian sites of the Auvergne region are located in rugged surroundings characterised by an upland terrain and climate. In this milieu it is essential to master water resources (re-emerging streams, run-off etc.), especially to avoid the damage that they could cause. Thus the water supply systems devised by the ten monasteries discussed here are associated with measures taken to protect and make viable the main hill slopes. This is often complemented by diversion channels fed from the rivers running in the valley in which the monasteries were implanted, in order to provide the monastic communities with a sufficient supply throughout the year ; these channels can take different forms, from drystone culverts to a simple open channel (leat or bief) and they can span long distances. Such provision contributes to enhancing the landscape over the long term and belongs to a long-established building tradition that only an approach to the landscape that includes a study of its time-depth and its taphonomy can apprehend, allowing us to connect the monastic occupation of the region from medieval to modern time.
