Summary:The article studies silence phenomenon as a means of regulating and tuning interpersonal relations with the reference to a story by a modern German writer Judith Hermann. Communicative pragmatic relevance of silence as a means of overcoming psychological discomfort of characters is stated; the pragmatics of choosing different behavior patterns in order to overcome conflict is claimed. It is specified that deliberate continuous silence is the main to avoid overt interpersonal confrontation, bring in harmony in relations and save them on the whole.
