Summary:A mitral valve prolapse nowadays is the most common cause of mitral insufficiency in the western countries and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. In the last decades repairing the mitral valve has become the operation of choice for treatment of the mitral valve prolapse, thus enabling to improve the geometry and function of the left ventricle and long-term survival. Literature related to mitral valve repair in patients with Barlow disease is reviewed.
