| description | Today, Johan Christian Dahl is considered to be the father of Norwegian painting. His way of painting the Norwegian landscape was very influential and marked Nordic landscape painters for many decades. However, at the very beginning of his career, he left Norway – since it lacked an artistic scene and society – for Copenhagen, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. Though he initially intended to return to live in Norway after his European journey, he ended his days in Dresden. This essay examines some of Dahl’s earliest works to understand how the artist laid the foundations for the depiction of his homeland even before returning to it and how he drew on both the fertile ground of the old masters and contemporary German Romantic philosophy to create the premises of what would later be considered as typically Norwegian. |
