| Summary: | One of the basic assumptions of both traditional and modern aesthetics, to which the vast majority of contemporary philosophers of art hold to, is the claim that the value of a work of art lies in its aesthetic value. The main goal of this study, however, is to demonstrate that this is not the case. Its main focus is the presentation of a new argument that develops the idea that, in addition to aesthetic value, we must also recognize another form of value, which I call artistic value. This value is no less essential for the assessment of art than aesthetic value. I have already defended this thesis in my previous publications; they, however, did not elicit the expected response. A possible reason was that my analyses assumed the acceptance of certain aesthetic judgments and art historical findings that not everyone may have agreed with. In the study that is presented here, I want to eliminate this problem with a new argumentative thesis, which proceeds purely from the meanings of the terms “originality,” “aesthetic value” and “work of art” that are used in it. It is therefore evidence that is based on conceptual analysis that, unlike the analyses presented in my previous texts, is not based on the acceptance of any aesthetic judgments or art historical knowledge. |
