| Summary: | This article analyzes two emic concepts, pièp and kièt, both connected to the idea of honor, to propose a functional model of Lao social interaction. It examines relational mechanisms and the main behavioral norms from a primarily practical point of view, allowing anyone concerned to achieve action efficiency in this framework. The interpretation of relevant ethnographic materials allows for the elaboration of finer anthropological definitions of these concepts – the semantic field of which encompasses the meanings of amour-propre, honorability, and prestige – which shed light on the dialectical relation between the individual and society in contemporary Laos. |
