Summary:An epidemiological-descriptive study was carried out in a group of diabetic patients from the University Clinic “Chiqui Gómez Lubián” in Santa Clara city. This study took place from January 2005 to January 2006, and involved 150 patients predominantly of male sex, with an average age of 59.12 years. The explorated variables were: periodontal state through the revised periodontal index, type of diabetes, evolution time of disease, applied drug-treatment, metabolic control, dental hygiene grade according to the revised dental hygiene index. The compilation process of data was made trough: document revision, interview, dental clinical exam and lab analysis. The applied statistical process let know that the prevalence (99.30%) and the seriousness of periodontal disease are closely related with dental hygiene and metabolic control of diabetes.
