| Summary: | Along with the development of the so-called free performing arts in Western Germany starting in the 1970s, public funding structures for this scene have evolved and been established. This article considers the discourses in the field of the funding of independent performing arts focusing the conceptions that are brought forth about artists, and the therein implied attitudes of artists towards their work, society, and public sponsors. Through a discourse analytical procedure that is based on Michel Foucault’s theoretical approach, current funding concepts, calls for proposals and guidelines are examined, focusing on three aspects with regard to their significance for artists and their work: the position of the sponsor as creative, competent actors; novelty and innovation as dominant criterion of artistic projects as well as the perception of art generated by the documents as something that can be planned over a long timeframe, well calculated and tangibly described in advance. |
