PLZT-Based Shutters for Free-Space Optical Fiber Switching by Fan Zhang, Hsi-Hsir Chou, W. A. Crossland

Published in IEEE Photonics Journal (2016-01-01)
“…A proof of concept <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$1\times N$</tex-math></inline-formula>, i.e., a 1 <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\times$</tex-math></inline-formula> 6 free-space optical fiber ribbon switching architecture capable of scaling to an <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$N\times N$</tex-math></inline-formula> switching architecture for data center network application, was experimentally implemented to investigate the fiber array switching properties of PLZT-based shutters based on a type of strip. The experimental results show that the bit error rates estimated from the <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$Q$</tex-math></inline-formula>-factor were all less than <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$10^{-9}$</tex-math></inline-formula> and that the jitters were all less than 7.35% under a variety of shutter driving voltages at a link speed of 1 Gb/s and above.…”
