| Summary: | In order to avoid interpreting Thomas Brasch‘s work solely from a biographical point of view, as is too often the case, an aesthetic and formal approach will be attempted here, based on the prose collection Vor den Vätern sterben die Söhne (1977), which focuses on the fragmentary character of the work. We will begin by discussing the special place of the fragment in East German literary history, which not only counters the totalising ambition of the Socialist Realist doctrine, but also testifies to the interest of many East German authors in the rediscovery of the romantic fragment. It will then be examined whether and to what extent the stories in Vor den Vätern sterben die Söhne can be considered fragments, focusing on the notions of discontinuity and continuity within the volume. Finally, the question will be asked whether the central issue underlying this fragmentary approach to reality is not the search for an appropriate form to tell of a disaster to come. |
