Description
Summary:This article is based on an ethnographic study which took place in different Timorese communities between September 2016 and November 2017. It seeks to discuss the legal provisions currently drafted in Timor-Leste for the identification and protection of cultural assets – especially those relating to sacred houses. The focus lies on understanding the ways in which elements of the local governance complex (called kultura ou kultura ceremony) have been transposed onto contexts of action in post-colonial Timor-Leste. The article develops from an anthropology of the processes of appropriation, spectacularization, expansion/reduction of social life and elements from the local governance complexes often organized at the/by the Houses and it analyses their implications in the elaboration of policies aiming at the preservation of cultural assets.
