| Summary: | Africans are particularly disadvantaged when it comes to access to energy. A significant majority of the continents’ inhabitants rely on biomass for their energy needs and are of necessity subsistence farm-ers. The production of four important crops in African countries, and the potential magnitude of residues for energy use from these, is analysed in this desktop study. It is clear that there is significant potential for using crop residues as a renewable energy resource in many parts of Africa, effectively combining the need for food and the need for ener-gy. Energy policy must be formulated to leverage the opportunity; however, supporting energy data collected by governmental statistical processes will need to include this additional information. |
