Resistance of Hospital Originated, ESBL (+) 50 Klebsiella pneumoniae Strains to Some Antibiotics and the Importance of the Distance Between Discs in Determining ESBL

Resistance to some antibiotics were investigated by Kirby-Bauer disc-diffusion method in extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) positive 50 Klebsiella pneumoniae strains isolated from patients. ESBL activity was found to be positive in 39 (78%), and 46 (92%) strains when the distance between disc c...

Description
Summary:Resistance to some antibiotics were investigated by Kirby-Bauer disc-diffusion method in extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) positive 50 Klebsiella pneumoniae strains isolated from patients. ESBL activity was found to be positive in 39 (78%), and 46 (92%) strains when the distance between disc centers were 30 and 20 mm respectively. Synergy was observed at 16 mm (center to center) in 4 (8%) strains. Resistance to amikacine 25 (50%), gentamicine 33 (66%), netilmicine 39 (78%), tobramycine 43 (86%), trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole 36 (72%), tetracycline 28 (56%), ciprofloxacine 14 (28%), ofloxacine 14 (28%), norfloxacine 14 (28%), cefepim 18 (36%), ticarcillin/clavulanic acid 38 (76%), piperacillin/tazobactam 14 (28%) and meropenem 3 (6%) were found respectively. All strains were susceptible to imipenem and colistine. Of 28 strains 10 (30.9%) were resistant to cefoxitin.
