Description
Summary:This paper provides a lexicometric analysis of the uses of the word propiedad in the XVIIth century polemic surrounding Góngora’s poetry. After a clarification of the different meanings of the word from the Antiquity to the XVIIth century, I study the co-occurrences and contexts of use of the adjective propio in the corpus edited by the OBVIL (Project Góngora) with the TXM and IRaMuTeQ softwares. I’ll show that the purists newly define Castilian as a language which is inherently pure (what I called the internalization of the extrinsic proprieties of language); this new definition in turn becomes the premise of a sophistic syllogism that aims at depicting Góngora’s idiolect as improper, and, in a exaggerated way, not Castilian.
