Description
Summary:Maghreb travelogues are not typically distinguished by their literary tone and in terms of subject matter often remain focused on the goal of Mecca and the pilgrimage itself. Al-Zayānī devoted ten years of his life (1792-1802) to traveling in the Orient, and his unique intellectual personality enabled him to overcome traditional writing codes in order to express his sincere feelings about the places he visited. Among those sites, Jerusalem occupies a special place in al-Zayānī’s travelogue, described in a way that is reminiscent of his European contemporaries’ Romantic style.
