Description
Summary:By using the English concept of performativity, this article defends that culture in seventeenth-century Spain cannot be analyzed nor understood if it is mutilated both from its spatio-temporal dimension and from its sensory context. Three specific examples created during the reign of Charles II (1661-1700) will be studied: a piece of court theater, a religious ceremony and a fresco painting. They will help us understand how the five senses were part of a cultural performativity aimed to deliver effective and efficient sociopolitical messages.
