La cirugía mayor electiva ambulatoria se ha impuesto en el mundo. En el Hospital Pediátrico Universitario de San Miguel del Padrón se comenzó a desarrollar este método desde octubre de1988, y se ha enriquecido y transformado en el transcurso del tiempo. Para conocer los resultados de este método se decidió estudiar lo realizado con este tipo de proceder durante el período de los años 2000 y 2001 y se estudiaron diferentes variables.Se realizó un total de 1 335 operaciones de cirugía mayor electiva ambulatoria durante los 2 años, para el 65 % de la cirugía mayor electiva total en el año 2000, y el 60% en el 2001. Se comprobó un ahorro en los gastos por operación y un incremento en la satisfacción de la población en relación con la cirugía mayor de corta estadía, lo que por sí solo recomienda el método para ser realizado en el 60 % de los casos en todos los hospitales pediátricos que tengan servicios de cirugía.<br>Ambulatory major elective surgery has imposed itself in the world. This method began to be developed at the Pediatric Teaching Hospital of San Miguel del Padrón, in October, 1988, and it has been enriched and transformed since then. To know the results of this method, it was decided to study what was done with this type of procedure in 2000 and 2000. Different variables were also studied. A total of 1 335 ambulatory elective major operations were performed during these 2 years, accounting for 65 % of the total elective major surgery in 2000 and 60 % in 2001. There was a saving in the expenses by operation and an increase in the population's satisfaction as regards short-stay major surgery, which makes this method recommendable to be used in 60 % of the cases in all the pediatric hospitals with surgery service.
