The objective of this studywastoassess the hearing status andthefrequencyofchronicotitismedia by audiological evaluationsin the cleftpalatepatientswith orwithout cleft lip. In the Euro-cleftproject,audiometry andtympanometryare consideredas necessary tests to evaluate hearing.Since there is a hugestatistical difference intheresults ofthetreatment of such patients indifferent geographicalregions, record and assessment ofthe status ofthetreatment of thepatientsduring the courseof treatment, based on the specified standard records,in every centerisnecessary.Material andMethod:In thiscross sectionalstudy,we assessedthe hearingstatusof 200non-syndromic patients(110 boys and 90 girls).Themean age of thepatientswas1.5±1.03years.Based onclinical ear examination, tympanometryandauditorybrainresponse (ABR)wereperformedatappropriate ageforevery patient. Results:According tothe results ofABR 5.8% of the ears were normal, 54%hadmildhearing loss (20-40 db), and 40.3% hadmoderateor severehearing loss. In general, wedetectedhearing impairment in 94.2% of the patients. The result oftympanometryrevealedtype B tymapanogramin89.8%, type Cin 3.7% andtype A in6.6%of the patients. After clinical examination,we found that insertion of V.T. isneeded for92.2% of the patients and, there was no difference between the girls and boysinthis regardin both age groupsofbelow and above one year old. Conclusion:Consideringthe high incidence of conductive hearing loss in cleft palate patientsand necessity of better understanding of hearing and middle ear problems, similar studiesinthe future, with comparison of their resultsindifferentmedicalcenters inIran and othercountriescan lead to development of new treatment methods in regard toprimary surgeries ofpalate and ENT care.http://sjku.muk.ac.ir/article-1-3746-en.pdfcleft palatehearing lossotitismedia
