Description
Summary:This article aims to study the “conspicuous consumption”, regarded as a higher consumption norm, the “living room” in the houses as a space under current circumstances and the objects used in this space with a scientific approach. Living rooms are the most suitable places for showing off. When compared to the other parts of the house, these places are observed to be flashier. “Conspicuous consumption” –studied by Thorstein Veblen in 1899- appears mostly in the living rooms. The objects in the living rooms function as a descriptive tool themselves. They are relatively more expensive and they can be regarded as the monetary measure for the prestige. Living rooms demonstrate the social statutes. While they are present in every stratum of the society, they also vary according to the socio-economic level. Living rooms and the objects in these rooms are used as symbols in the application part of the study. They are analyzed in a semiotic plane using Roland Barthes symbol technique. The living rooms varying according to the socio-economic level are tools and significant symbols reflecting the economic strata and statue difference in Erzurum
