We propose that Gay’s Atlas constituted the first example, at least in Chilean history, of the conscious use of images as pedagogic instruments aimed to spread widely notions pertaining scientific knowledge, physiognomy and the nature of a society captured through the representation of its social models, typical environments, distinctive occupations and characteristics forms of leisure.
