Summary: | In this text on nineteenth -century emigration, documented displacements with passports issued in
the district of Viana do Castelo in the nineteenth century, we will present some quantitative elements on mobility,
where the variables related to gender, marital status, age, literacy and distribution for years have a prominent
place, As a demographic perspective. Starting from the Passport Records Books of the Viana Civil Government
Archive (AGC), we organized the movement data with a single passport, separating the cases of
re -embarkation and second exits. After the first approach, we used the banal written correspondence in
passport processes, and analyzed the problem of the longing for anonymous people, observed from the perspective
of the emigrant. We want to see what this suffering represents, which afflicts those who are separated
from theirs, the Self and the Other, and how these exiles communicated to whom the letter was the link of a
chain of affections
