Description
Summary:Supported by the modern theories of the text, which recognize the insufficiency of any critical approach that is based exclusively in traditional theories of language, this paper suggests some guidelines to the interpretation of the poetics of the fragmentary in postmodern music. In this context the author pinpoints the importance of the concept of parataxis, in opposition to the concept of syntax, to the formation of the post-modern musical language. Some pieces of Debussy and Stravinsky are analyzed to reveal the role of the paratactic juxtaposition in modern music. Also recognizes the generalization of the problem in the postmodern repertoire, analyzing some pieces of Gilberto Mendes and Coelho de Souza that extend the concept of parataxis to the levels of musical rhetoric, style and intertextuality.
