Studies into the subject can be divided into three major groups: 1. Pre-revolutionary studies (Russian and foreign works published prior to 1917); 2. Soviet studies (1917-1991); 3. Modern Russian studies (1991-2014). In conclusion, the authors point up that despite the diversity of studies into the history of the Caucasus and the Caucasian War, fragmentary attention has been devoted to the history of the north Black Sea region in the 18th-19th centuries.
