Summary:Coping has been defined as a cognitive process through which people manage problems and stressful situations indaily life. Researchers have emphasized the influence of situational factors on coping strategies. This studyinvestigated differences on coping strategies used by adolescents in three specific areas: family, friends and school,and examined the relationship between coping, subjective well-being, and self-esteem. The participants were 242male and female students of high schools in Porto Alegre, Brazil, between 13 and 20 years of age. The resultspointed to significant differences between coping strategies in two areas, friends and school. Significant correlationswere found between coping and subjective well-being in these two areas (r = .24 and r = .22, respectively). Nosignificant correlations were found between coping and self-esteem.
