Interviews were conducted with fifteen patients from a hemodialysis clinic in the state of Rio de Janeiro, in May 2014, and four themes were identified from content analysis: Pain; Safety and Quality; Aesthetics; and Well-being. The buttonhole technique has contributed satisfactorily and significantly to the quality of life of patients. They associated this technique with low levels of pain; safety and quality - despite not being able to qualify treatment due to the lack of knowledge about the functioning of the process; the preservation of aesthetics and body image; and the sense of well-being. These results point to the importance of valuing the opinion and the subjects’ participation in choosing their treatment.http://dx.doi.org/10.5380/ce.v20i3.41576Chronic renal insufficiencyRenal dialysisArteriovenous fistulaNursing
