Summary:This article deals with peculiarities of creating informal names for the types of cars which are known in Ukraine. Attention is focused on onyms with association as a way of word formation. The mechanism of derivation of associates is reviewed. A necessity of distinguishing association word-building method grounded in the process of analyzing informal names of cars because traditional ways of creating words do not satisfy modern needs in explaining creation of words. Various causes of appearing of informal names of the types of the cars in Ukrainian language are determined. Their connection to the associative process as means of word formation is also disclosed. Associative method of word formation is proved to be the most productive way of creating unofficial names of cars. It helps to impress some information about the brand of the car.
