O objetivo deste artigo é analisar a polêmica na construção do ethos dos sujeitos políticos envolvidos no segundo turno da eleição municipal de Maringá, no ano de 2004. Para tanto, escolhemos um corpus constituído pelo debate político televisivo entre os doiscandidatos do segundo turno – João Ivo Caleffi (JIC/PT), representante da situação, e Sílvio Barros (SB/PP), representando a oposição. Com base nas noções de polêmica e de ethos preconizadas pela Análise do Discurso na vertente de Maingueneau, a análise do movimento interdiscursivo polêmico dos dois sujeitos mostrou que o ethos é construído simultaneamente a um processo de desqualificação da imagem do adversário.<br><br>This study aims to analyze the polemic surrounding the ethos construction of the politicians involved in the runoff of the municipal elections of Maringá, in 2004. To accomplish these objectives, a corpus was chosen consisting of the televised political debate between the two candidates of the second round: João Ivo Caleffi (JIC/PT), representing the situation, and Sílvio Barros (SB/PP), representing the opposition. Based on the notions of polemic and the ethos proposed by the Maingueneau Discourse Analysis, the analysis of the controversial interdiscoursive movement of the twopoliticians showed that the ethos is constructed simultaneously to a process of disqualification of the opponent’s image.
