Summary: | This article examines how the Pataxó Indians (Porto Seguro, Bahia) have been pursuing a “cultural rescuing” project through the erection of an “ecotouristic” place, the Jaqueira Reserve. Via the analytical trope of “mediation,” I focus on the synergy between two dynamics: heritage formation and cultural commodification. I argue that in providing such platform for cultural design and performance, the Jaqueira Reserve has evolved into a critical heterotopia for rendering a cultural canon of Pataxóness tangible and quotidianly experienced. |
