Epidemiological and clinicopathological characteristics of breast cancer in Eastern Indonesia

Breast cancer ranks among the most common cancers in Indonesia, where more than 80% of cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage when treatment is relatively difficult. In Indonesia's South Sulawesi province, breast cancer had the highest incidence of all types of cancer between 2008 and 2012. T...

In Indonesia's South Sulawesi province, breast cancer had the highest incidence of all types of cancer between 2008 and 2012. The objective of our study was to evaluate the epidemiological and histopathological characteristics of breast cancer in eastern Indonesia. Our retrospective study covered all patients with breast cancer treated in a tertiary hospital in eastern Indonesia between July 2014 and June 2017. The variables analyzed were age, parity, tumor location, clinical stage of cancer, therapeutic measures, histopathology, degree of differentiation, and immunohistochemical subtypes. Patients' medical records revealed 365 cases of breast cancer at the tertiary hospitals from July 2014 to June 2017. Most patients were multiparous women 41 to 50 years old with left-sided, advanced-stage cancer who had been treated according to their clinical stage. The most common histology was moderately differentiated invasive ductal carcinoma of the luminal immunohistochemical B subtype. Breast cancer remains an exceptionally common disease whose epidemiological trends in eastern Indonesia, especially the predominance of invasive ductal carcinoma, have increased annually.
