Jakes Gerwel (1946–2012)
I got to know Jakes Gerwel (18 January 1946–28 November 2012) in the mid-1970s. He was my undergraduate lecturer and I completed two postgraduate degrees under his supervision. Our acquaintance evolved into collegiality and friendship.
