Description
Summary:Retrospective Study of Reproductive Parameters of Kouri Taurine Cattle at the Sayam Station in Niger. The reproduction data of 292 Kouri cows, collected from 1994 to 2011, were studied at the Secondary Center of Multiplication of Sayam Cattle in Niger. Similarly, cyclicity related parameters were studied in a herd of 16 empty cows after one year of apparent heat monitoring. The objective of the study is to contribute to the characterization of the Kuri cattle on the basis of its reproductive parameters. The following results were obtained: Birth weight was 26.1 ± 4.4 kg; Mean age at first calving 46.4 ± 9.1 months; Mean calving-calving interval 19.4 ± 5.7 months; Postpartum delay 4.0 ± 1.8 months; Cycle duration 21.4 ± 3.6 days, Oestrus duration 28.6 ± 15.7 hours. Cows' calving rank and birth year had a significant effect on the reproductive performance. The calving season had a significant effect (p <0.05) on the postpartum period and on the duration of the cycle. The high birth weight and the early puberty abilities observed in some animals can be exploited to improve zootechnical performances of the Kouri breed.
