<p>The ceramic industry is a very important activity in several municipalities of the state of Guanajuato, where a significant and constant demand is kept for clay as raw material to formulate pastes used in the manufacturing of utilitarian and ornamental ceramic products. Traditionally, there have existed evidences about important clay deposits in the state of Guanajuato with suitable ceramic properties, which have not been completely characterized or quantified. Thus, considering the relevance of this raw materials to the ceramic industry in the region, as well as the difficulties to dispose of ceramic commercial materials with high and homogeneous quality at a low cost, the <em>Centro de Investigaciones en Química Inorgánica </em>and the <em>Dirección de Fomento Minero del Estado de Guanajuato </em>established a collaborating project focused on the study of the selected clay deposits and taking into account the following aspects: clay characterization, evaluation of the ceramic properties and calculation of the existing reserves. In this paper the results of the chemical and mineralogical characterization of the clays in the selected zone samples are presented. The results were reviewed with respect to the obtained values in the characterization of the commercial pastes ordinarily used by the potters in order to establish an initial estimation about the real potential of the clay deposits studied.</p><br><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; line-height: normal; mso-layout-grid-align: none;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;"><span style="font-family: "AGaramond-Regular","serif"; font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-family: AGaramond-Regular;">La industria cerámica es una actividad muy importante en varios municipios del estado de Guanajuato, donde se mantiene una gran demanda de arcillas como materia prima para la formulación de pastas en la manufactura de productos cerámicos utilitarios y ornamentales. Tradicionalmente han existido evidencias de yacimientos importantes de arcillas de calidad cerámica en el estado de Guanajuato, pero aún no han sido completamente caracterizados y cuantificados. Así, considerando la importancia de esta materia prima para la industria cerámica de la región, y las dificultades para disponer de materiales cerámicos comerciales de calidad a bajo costo, el </span><em><span style="font-family: "AGaramond-Italic","serif"; font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-family: AGaramond-Italic;">Centro de Investigaciones</span></em></span><span style="font-family: "AGaramond-Regular","serif"; font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-family: AGaramond-Regular;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span><em><span style="font-family: "AGaramond-Italic","serif"; font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-family: AGaramond-Italic;">en Química Inorgánica </span></em><span style="font-family: "AGaramond-Regular","serif"; font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-family: AGaramond-Regular;">y la </span><em><span style="font-family: "AGaramond-Italic","serif"; font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-family: AGaramond-Italic;">Dirección de</span></em><span style="font-family: "AGaramond-Regular","serif"; font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-family: AGaramond-Regular;"> </span><em><span style="font-family: "AGaramond-Italic","serif"; font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-family: AGaramond-Italic;">Fomento Minero del Estado de Guanajuato</span></em><span style="font-family: "AGaramond-Regular","serif"; font-size: 8pt; mso-bidi-font-family: AGaramond-Regular;">, establecieron un proyecto de colaboración, enfocado al estudio de yacimientos seleccionados, contemplando los siguientes aspectos: caracterización de las arcillas, evaluación de sus propiedades cerámicas, y cálculo de las reservas existentes. En este trabajo se presentan los resultados de la caracterización química y mineralógica de arcillas de zonas seleccionadas de muestreo. Los resultados fueron relacionados con respecto a los valores obtenidos en la caracterización de pastas comerciales típicamente utilizados por el gremio ceramista, para establecer una estimación inicial sobre el potencial real de los depósitos de arcillas estudiados.</span></p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span>
