The aim of this study was to discuss the influence of traffic accidents in its physical and psychological morbidity; in the economic, social and personal costs and the  repercussion of injuries and other problems on quality of life. The method was the critical review of the literature from publications of Medline, Lilacs and Scielo. There was high morbidity and mortality: 50 million people injured and 1.2 million who die annually in traffic accidents in the world. With an excess of male injuries preferentially affect young people. The costs add up 518 billion dollars a year with a strong repercussion in economics, health, social and personal life. The prevalence of psychological disorders after an accident at any severity level was high and long lasting. It is inferred that its impact on quality of life of its victims, must acquire great importance, despite the small number of studies on the subject. It’s recommended investing in research because the lack of more information may lead to the development of policies that do not contemplate the complexity of the universe of traffic accidents.
