Summary:<strong>Foundation:</strong> teacher´s development is one of the most important issues in schools. Behind any significant improvement underlies the professorship activity. <br /><strong>Objective:</strong> to design a strategy to assure the sustainability of the medical career staff. <br /><strong>Methods:</strong> pedagogical research realized at the Faculty of Medical Sciences Cienfuegos. The System of Evaluation and Certification of University Careers and the Medicine Syllabus were analyzed to diagnose the current situation of the staff; trends and regularities were identified in the process of self-evaluation and external evaluation to specify and characterize the constituting features. A documentary review was done, so as interviews and surveys to professors, the ranking method for prioritizing the identified problems and the specialist criteria for validating the strategy.<br /> <strong>Result:</strong> The strategy consists of four stages: diagnosis of the current situation of the staff, conceptualization of the constituting features statement of the actions to develop, construction of indicators and evaluation. Each stage includes objectives, indicators, evaluation criteria, and actions for each criterion, degree of attainment, levels of performance, execution deadlines and organizations implied. Th validation showed agreement in its relevance, novelty, viability and the possibility it offers of integrating the direction and organization levels for methodological work. <br /><strong>Conclusion:</strong> the strategy designed constitutes a guide so that each process direction level designs and develops its own strategy that allows the sustainability of the medical career staff and the continuous quality development.
