Summary:Economic structural change is one of core issues of developing economies. In fact, the movements and transformation of the fundamental structure of an economy is diverse and the outcomes depend on both objective and subjective factors. Particularly, the economic structure change in Ho Chi Minh City has obtained a number of promising and remarkable results in the recent years, proving that the progress is on the right track as set by the Municipality’s Communist Party and Government. These achievements have beena driving force for further economy development in Ho Chi Minh City. However, in addition to these positive results, Ho Chi Minh City still has to face many challenges, especially in the context of international integration.The paper aims to provide a preliminary review on the progress of this shift in Ho Chi Minh City –one of the major economic centers of the country. The study tries to identify the achievements and the limitations in the efforts to accomplish this structural change process in the City as well as the causes of these issues. As a further effort, recommendations are also proposed to ensure that this progess keeps going on the right direction and contributing to create sustainable development for Ho Chi Minh City.
