Summary: | In the context of the global trend of cannabis legalization of the ensuing increasingly competitive market, Morocco, a major illegal hashish producer, can benefit from comparative advantages that must be identified and valued in the likely event of legalization. This article posits, on the basis of botanical, agronomic and semantic data, that the kif cannabis variety that is cultivated in Morocco is a landrace and is therefore best suited to the natural environment of the Rif region, especially considering the increasing scarcity of water resources. The text then recommends to favour kif cultivation by recognizing its by-products as terroir products, by granting them protected designations of origin (PDO), and by promoting organic cultivation and a fair-trade market as prerequisites for a critical regional stability.
