Summary: | The article discusses the historical and cultural heritage of the territory of the Greater Sochi in the medieval period. The attention is paid to the Christian Orthodox churches and their archaeological study. This article utilizes the records of archaeological expeditions, monographic literature and periodicals. In conclusion the authors note that 9 temples were built on the territory of the Sochi region in the middle ages. In the IX–XII centuries the temples have a cross-domed type of building. Later there were built the single-domed churches, which were distinguished by the proportions, the elegance of form, and the compactness of the internal space. The cross-domed churches were built of slabs of sandstone and shale. The technology of masonry walls was typical for provincial Byzantine churches. The masonry mortar was not destroyed and weathering in the humid subtropical climate.
