AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE PERSPECTIVES OF TURKISH NEWSPAPERS ON NATURAL DISASTERS

The purpose of the present study is to examine the discourse used by Turkish printed media (newspapers) to report the natural disasters that occurred in Turkey and abroad between 2009 and 2012, whether the press was worried about raising individuals' awareness of natural disasters and the extent to which these newspapers published in Turkish were analyzed. News stories were obtained from a media centre. 1234 documents were divided into four general and twenty-one subcategories by using correlation analysis. The correlation between categories was examined using Pearson correlation. Some of the results of the study obtained are as follows.a. The analysis revealed that the news items with the highest number were related to earthquakes.b. The news items mostly had news content. Besides this, there were educational and magazine news about natural disasters.c. The news reports about natural disasters in the Turkish printed media are presented to the reader in the inner pages. However, the news concerning natural disasters causing considerable loss of lives and properties in Turkey mostly makes headlines and cover a half or the three-thirds of the front page.d. Natural disasters remain on the agenda as a news item as long as it has an impact upon social, economic and daily life, and they make headlines.
