Description
Summary:This article presents the results of a study about caretakers of handicapped people. The study was conducted with caretakers who belong to the rehabilitation unit of the institute for deaf and blind children (Instituto para Niños Ciegos y Sordos (INCYS)) in Cali, Valle del Cauca. In the attention provided to the patients, active participation on the part of the family is indispensable. However, this study reveals the low level of responsibility assumed by the family evidenced in: limited participation in different activities, accompaniment at home, overprotective behaviour and the delegation of the role of caretaker to the mother (in 78.49% of the cases). This delegation of the role of caretaker represents a burden for these mothers in terms of emotions and their general domestic responsibilities, and affects their quality of life and, on many occasions, the process of rehabilitation of the child.
