It is divided into fve lines of thought from which the historicity of frontiers and the active role that social actors play in their construction are highlighted. The frst revolves around the signs, words, and maps through which the frontier was represented. The second centers on the relations that this concept confgures in space. Third, the article addresses the frontier-size relation in order to highlight its mutable character, how it helps shape territorial identities, and its effect on the dynamics of demands, rights, and reclamations regarding land. The fourth line of thought addresses dependency as a frontier process in terms of spatial inter-referentiality and the hierarchization of rights.
