This article studies the development of the historical method in the study of religion including its philosophical and theological aspects. A major breakthrough in this process occurred when Russian experts adopted some of the ideas of Fr. M. Müller. The author analyzes the most important works of O. M. Novitskij , I. A. Chistovich, archbishop Hrisanph (Retivtsev) as well as the contributions of the following professors of the Moscow Ecclesiastical Academy: V. D. Kudriavtsev-Platonov, A. I. Vvedenskij , and S. S. Glagolev.
