Summary:The article is devoted to the analysis of the philosophic concept of the image of the future. The author defines this concept as some general idea of social expectations, existing at definite culture in definite time; he views its significance in the modern Russian science and social and political journalism. The author his particular attention focuses on Polak’s ideas about the image of the future. The article, introduces the Russian reader to with Polak’s conceptions which are set out in his work ‘The image of the future’, the book having been not yet translated into Russian. A study of the role of the image of the future in society is not only of purely academic interests, but it is also of great practical significance since modern culture faces a hard task of forging a positive and constructive vision of Tomorrow so as to realize this vision. Fred Polak was the first to undertake the difficult conceptual endeavour of clarify the role of the image of the future in the social process at the societal level.
