Semi-structured interviews were held and systematic observation made, between 2010 and 2011, the data being analyzed by means of thematic analysis. Two categories emerged from the data: adherence to the treatment and family support. The study evidenced the importance of the nurse in caring for the family, and not just the person with diabetes mellitus, guiding her and sharing knowledge such that she may have better quality of life.http://dx.doi.org/10.5380/ce.v18i3.33562Nursing careHome visitsDiabetes mellitus
