Summary:This article analyzes the results of revision of the Red Data Book of the Nizhny Novgorod region, evaluated changes in the list of rare wildlife species in connection with preparing the second edition of the Red Data Book of the Nizhny Novgorod Region. Сategories of the status of species' rarity are characterized. The problems of rare species of the Red Book of the Nizhny Novgorod region are discussed. The reasons for exclusion of species from the list protected are analyzed. The situation with the preservation of biodiversity in the region remains difficult. The situation with the preservation of biodiversity in the region remains difficult. The list of protected species of animals in the new edition of the Red Book of the Nizhny Novgorod region (2014) has increased from 256 to 287 species. The process of revision of the regional Red Book is a “catalyst” for individual study of rare species and biological diversity of the region as a whole. It boosts the study of biodiversity and gives more monitoring opportunities to specialists.
