URBAN RENEWAL SAMPLES IN TERMS OF CITY GEOGRAPHY IN TURKEY

Urban renewal projects have become a current issue to restructure the irregular formation and the problems resulted in those cities in accordance with contemporary city planning principles. Urban renewal is to re-handle city development socially, economically and spatially and to produce projects and practice those projects to destroy and reconstruct, to renew, to render well being or to restructure the problematic areas in the city by turning them into a healthy and inhabitable place. In brief, urban renewal means to solve the problems that damage the form of a city. In squatter renewal/city reformation projects, it is aimed to reform the illegal housing areas and economically out of date areas by supplying necessary municipal and social outfits by regarding all possibilities of natural disasters and correspondingly to the standards of public improvements. Urban renewal should not become a practice of dispossession of the poor in the city. That source transmission should not supported by elimination of the collapse and informal areas of low-income groups and should not be performed via opening those areas for expensive projects in terms of urban renewal. In İstanbul, off condition historical places (Sulukule, Tarlabaşı, Fener, Balat, Ayvansaray, Tokludede Turkish district etc.) and squatter areas (Küçükçekmece, Ayazma, etc.) are being discharged via urban renewal. This process is carried out by local authorities and TOKİ. In this study, urban renewal process will be examined and urban renewal projects in İstanbul will be analyzed.
