Description
Summary:Thermogenesis in adipose tissue is considered as a potential target in the treatment of obesity and metabolic syndrome. Molecular mechanisms and regulation of thermogenesis have studied in the brown adipose tissue. The purpose of this review is to systematize the current information about the new type of thermogenic adipocytes which are detected in the white fat depots. Morphological and biochemical features, the regulatory factors, the developmental origin of these cells are discussed in comparison with the typical brown and white adipocytes. Their anatomical localization and thermogenic capacity in humans are presented. It has been concluded that the evolutionary emergence of two types of thermogenic cells with the different extent of plasticity has expanded the range of thermogenic responses, promoted the establishment of energy-saving thermoregulation. The total contribution of new type of thermogenic adipocytes in the energy metabolism, the possible regulatory functions of these cells require the further studies.
