Description
Summary:This article studies certain aspects of how knowledge is transmitted in Brazilian state schools. Since the 1980s, the school system has opened its doors to the most underprivileged segments of the urban populations, bringing about considerable changes in day-to-day behavior patterns. Faced with this new public, requirements in terms of discipline and dedication to learning have considerably weakened, as has the observance of the official programs. Moreover, the teachers, exhausted since they often hold down several jobs to compensate for their low wages, are prone to depression. The pupils, in turn, get used to a tolerant institutional world which no longer represents a departure from their original social environment.
