La actividad de trasplante renal comienza en Cuba el 24 de febrero de 1970, con donante cadáver. En el 1979 se inicia el trasplante renal con donante vivo emparentado y de primera línea. Existen 47 hospitales distribuidos por todo el país donde se atienden 2 775 pacientes en métodos de sustitución de la función renal. De ellos 1 440 están en espera de un trasplante renal. Para lograr las vísceras destinadas al programa renal existen 63 hospitales acreditados donde se maneja de forma multidisciplinaria la muerte encefálica y gracias a ello más del 90 % de los trasplantes efectuados por años son de donante cadáver. La selección del receptor ideal se hace a través de un programa computarizado nacional en igualdad de posibilidades para todos los enfermos sin importar la distancia que esté de cada centro de trasplante, teniendo como base fundamental la compatibilidad en el sistema mayor HLA.<br>Renal transplantation activity is started in Cuba in February 24, 1970 using a cadaver donor. In 1979 the renal transplantation is begun with a related live donor and of first line. There are 47 hospital distributed in all the country where 2 775 patients in substitution method of renal function are seen. From them, 1 440 are waiting for a renal transplantation. To obtain the visceral organs devoted to the renal program are 63 accredited hospitals where the multidisciplinary way of encephalic death is managed, and thanks to this situation, more than 90% of the transplantations performed by years are from cadaver donor. Selection of the suitable recipient is made through a national computerized program on equal terms for all the patients it doesn't matter the distance from the transplantation center having as the fundamental bases the compatibility in HLA major system.
