| Summary: | [Purpose/significance] Based on the review of half-life indexes in periodical evaluation at home and abroad, this paper finds that half-life indexes are mixed and misused in the process of being used. so, we analyze and explore these problems. [Method/process] Using the core journals’ index data of library and information science and economics as a sample, which come from the Statistical Database of International and Domestic Influences in China Academic Journals, we discussed the application rationality of half-life indexes in periodical evaluation though the visualization tools, correlation analysis and other statistical methods. [Results/conclusion] It has been found that half-life has some limitations in periodical evaluation. There is a great difference between historical and contemporary methods in reflecting the aging rate of literature. There are also some misunderstandings about the use of half-life indexes, According to these situations, this paper proposes some recommendations for half-life use.
