The animated illustration as a show. Lightning sketch films

At the end of the 19th century, the performing arts were developed along with variety shows that newly gaining strength. The caricature was growing in popularity and reach thanks to the expansion of the press and magazines, and also finds a place in live shows by lightning sketch drawings. On the other hand, within the cinema, the discovery of the stop-motion technique allows filmmakers to create tricks on the big screen. The combination of these techniques gives rise to a series of films called "lightning sketch films" which eventually lay the groundwork for the creation of future cartoons. These films are analysed  in relation to illustration and its connection to entertainment at the turn of the century.
